Business Strategy

“No wind favours he who has no destined port.” Michel de Montaigne

Business strategy is always overlooked by companies. Most companies do have their mission and vision statements and most of them are left at that. It is apparent within companies we visited over the years that there are lots of KPIs and targets but there is no link to a proper business strategy. iLean Limited can help you on creating your business strategy and make mission, vision, action plans and KPIs to get together to carry your business to a successful future.

Our action would start bringing all your departments together for a simple SWOT (and or PESTLE) analysis and that would be followed with determining the future of your business. This main goal for the business will be turned into action plan for each department and linked with the KPIs to keep them at the same path. A strategy wheel will also be established to share with your organisation so everybody in business would know where they are going. It is a simple exercise and would finish within a week. Hard part is to follow all the actions and bringing all the actions together to steer the business on the right way.

The World is changing quicker than ever so even if you do have your strategy made in the past, don’t forget to revisit, reinvent and realign your strategy at least every three years. Keep the PDCA cycle turning on your strategy process. Let us know if we can help in any way possible for sustainable growth for your business.

Total Lean Implementation

From Lean Strategy to implementing all tools and techniques. We will help you all the way.

Lean Operations implementation is a long journey and most of the time it doesn’t require full time attention of a consultant into the business. Total Lean Implementation will require a Lean Practitioner in your business. This person can already be employed by you (i.e. an industrial engineer or an operations manager who knows the basics of making improvements to processes). We will work closely with that person and mentor him to champion and lead lean implementation.

Total Lean Implementation starts with looking at your organisation’s all processes and systems including customer base, supplier base, accounts, operations etc. After one to two weeks of working with your people your Current State Value Stream Maps are created for you and from those maps, we together decide how the Future State of the business should look like. This will give us the opportunity to create the Lean Road Map which shows the actions for making the Future State a reality. These actions will be creating Value Stream Maps for main product or services and identifying areas for Kaizens, Flow creation and pull systems. We will be with you all the stages of the implementations and mentor the person in your business to carry on the journey yourself. Just to keep in mind that Lean is not a destination it is a journey for making sustainable profitable growth.

In short Total Lean Implementation steps are;

One of our chief consultants will come and create an overall Current State Map for your business with you. Future State Map will be created for your business with you to identify first focus areas. We will mentor the person in your business whom you will choose, or recruit and we will train and mentor him/her for the Lean journey. We will create Current and Future Value Stream Maps in identified areas and make a Lean Road Map for all improvement activities (Kaizens, 5S, SMED, Pull Systems, TPM etc.) We will be with you all the way for those improvement activities, provide training and consultancy to make them happen. By the time we finish you will have your own Lean Practitioner fully trained and mentored for taking your business forward.

Lean Road Map

It is not enough to have all the skills. You will need a Lean Road Map to apply those skills correctly.

We have seen so many places with right skills and a wrong application. Lean Road Map starts with looking at your organisation’s all processes and systems including customer base, supplier base, accounts, operations etc.

In short Lean Road Map steps are;

One of our chief consultants will come and create an overall Current State Map for your business with you. Future State Map will be created for your business with you to identify first focus areas. We will create Current and Future Value Stream Maps in identified areas and make a Lean Road Map for all improvement activities (Kaizens, 5S, SMED, Pull Systems, TPM etc.) This will show you the way to apply your skills on right areas.

If you want us to be implementing the Lean Road Map created. We can do that too.

Value Stream Mapping

Lean starts with “Value”. Lean Implementation starts with a Value Stream Map.

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is simply observing current movements of materials or service and information with their correlation with time. Plotting information on a paper will show everything about a value stream and will present ideas to envision a future state with much better performance. VSM shows the points of disruption to flow of the value and presents the real wastes within.

Value Stream Mapping is the starting point of a lean implementation. VSM gives the opportunity to companies to start thinking of the real value they are delivering to their customers. VSM shows the whole picture to the company rather than parts of the organisation in isolation.

We can facilitate the Value Stream Mapping for your company. This facilitation takes 2-5 days. First day will be the training day with your team and the rest will be spent on creating your Current State Value Stream for your products. We will collect and analyse the data required for facilitation before the event. At the end of the workshop you will have the whole picture of your business or your main product lines. This will allow you to create your future state value stream maps for lean implementation.

Pull Systems and Kanban

Push is no longer good for business. This is how you align yourself to your customers.

Most companies work with push systems within their operations. They push orders to operations and push those orders through series of operations. This type of working practice creates overproduction, high stock levels and waste of time for performing operations that is not yet required by customers. Pull system is a principle of lean operations. Pull system provides flexibility and operations that closest to customer demands.

Kanban is a signal used in Pull Systems and tells previous operation to start working. Kanban can be a card, visual or electronic signal. Kanbans allow operations to schedule and prioritise the work load much better than any MRP/ERP system can provide.

We can facilitate the Pull System implementation for your company. This facilitation takes 2-5 days. First day will be the training day with your team and the rest will be spent on implementing Pull Systems for identified processes. We will collect and analyse the data required for facilitation before the event.

5S Workplace Organisation

Workplace organisation. Best way to save time and money.

5S terminology comes from acronym of 5 Japanese words (Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, Shitsuke) and translated into English with 5 words (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain) that forms 5S again. 5S is shortly explained as “Workplace Organisation”. 5S provides sustained discipline of keeping the workplace organised and allows any employee in the workplace to find any tool or equipment within seconds to finish performing any required work.

5S is most widely used tool of Lean operations and creates a discipline for workplace organisation. Everything has a place and everything is in its place.

5S can be implemented in everywhere i.e. offices, manufacturing areas or even to vehicles. We can facilitate the 5S implementation for your company. This facilitation takes 2-5 days. First day will be the training day with your team and the rest will be spent on implementing 5S for identified areas.

SMED Quick Changeovers

The most powerful tool in Lean. Undervalued by many companies. SMED is not just about changeovers, SMED is about everything you do.

SMED terminology comes from acronym of 4 main words (Single Minute Exchange of Dies) and aims to perform a changeover in single digit minutes (less than 10 minutes). The challenge came from setup time taken by big die changes in an automotive company. The company reduced their setup time from 8 hours down to 3 minutes. That’s why SMED is shortly explained as “Quick Changeovers”. SMED helps companies to reduce their batch quantities and increases available machine time. SMED can be implemented anywhere in a business where there is a change of work takes place.

SMED principles can be used in everywhere in business or in life. You can even reduce the time for getting ready to go to work at your home.

We can facilitate the SMED implementation for your company. This facilitation takes 2-5 days. First day will be the training day with your team and the rest will be spent on implementing SMED for identified proceses.

Kaizen Blitz

Most powerful way of implementing a project in anywhere. Kaizen Blitz is also named as Kaikaku.

Kaizen Blitz is the new era for improvement activities. The word Kaizen again comes from Japanese; Kai means change and Zen means good. Together Kaizen stands for change for good or better. Kaizen is the best way of implementing Lean Operation into businesses. Kaizen is normally performed in small steps in a long period of time. The quicker way of making changes is called Kaizen Blitz or as in Japanese “Kaikaku”. Kaizen Blitz can be performed in every part of the organisation in any sector.

We can facilitate weeklong Kaizen Blitz events for your organisation. We will be collating most of the data from your company before the event and we will help you to make the problem statement which the Kaizen will be performed for.

Kaizen events mostly requires minimum of ten people from cross sectional departments of the business. It is always beneficial to have somebody with H&S experience in the team.

Kaizen facilitation will start with a Lean Awareness / Kaizen Blitz training on the first day. Second day will be spent on looking at the current state of the problem and brain storming of ideas for possible solutions. Kaizen will continue with effort impact analysis and implementation on third and fourth day. Fifth day will be the finalising day for actions and presenting improvements to the team you will select.

Better returns on your investment, saving and freeing up space, improved productivity and capacity creation only some of the outcomes of the Kaizen event in only one week.
